Exhibition title: Between Memory

Event description: Between Memory is a group exhibition of current Master in Fine Arts candidates, Esther Cho, Heather Kolhmeier, and Veronica Pham in Design Studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Between Memory will feature stories where handmade paper transforms into various installations, bringing the human experience into a visible and palpable form.

The exhibition will be open to the public from May 1st–May 9th. A gallery reception will be held on Friday, May 5th from 5PM-8PM. There will be an artist performance from artist Esther Cho and an artist walkthrough for the exhibiting artists on their work. This exhibition is proudly supported by the School of Human Ecology, and the Creative Arts Award in the Division of Art, UW-Madison.

Artist Bios

Esther Cho is an interdisciplinary artist and papermaker. Her research-based studio practice focuses on devising narrative installations for archiving the history and retelling the stories of Asian Americans, children of immigrants, and Asian diasporas to consider the experience of identity, gender, loss of lineage, and cultural disconnect. In 2017, she received the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship to travel to South Korea and study the process of traditional Korean papermaking and its related craft forms. She currently attends the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is pursuing her second Master of Fine Arts degree in Design Studies with a focus on papermaking and material culture.

Heather Kohlmeier is an interdisciplinary artist and papermaker. Process and material are central to her making practice and inspire her creation of both functional and sculptural forms. These forms are often a study of translucency, as well as the relationship between strength and fragility found within the natural world. Kohlmeier is currently perusing an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a focus in papermaking. Her forthcoming article on the history and contemporary use of indigo by papermakers will appear in the summer 2023 edition of Hand Papermaking Magazine. She will be teaching an indigo for papermaking and fiber arts workshop in the summer of 2023, at the Minnesota Center for the Book.

Pham continues to conduct fieldwork in Vietnam on traditional and contemporary papermaking practices with a focus on collaborative research. Pham holds a B.F.A in Painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and lives in the Mid-Western region of the United States where she enjoys incorporating local hemp in her papermaking practice.
