Healthy Housing

Common Wealth Development provides affordable rental housing opportunities to low and moderate-income households through the ownership and management of 160 apartments. There are 114 apartments scattered throughout the Williamson-Marquette neighborhood on Madison’s East side, and 46 apartments in the Meadowood neighborhood on Madison’s Southwest side. Our units are income-restricted based on county median income. Additionally, in 2023 Common Wealth partnered with The Road Home to manage 15 units in the Meadowood Neighborhood in support of The Road Home’s Housing & Hope program. Apartment sizes vary from studios (efficiencies) to 3-bedrooms. 

Housing Availability 

Our main leasing season is from June 1 through August 15. However, we occasionally have tenants who move out early over the Fall and Winter. We purchase new properties from time to time and renovate them throughout the year, so we could potentially have off-season availability as those units become ready. 

The Application Process

When we have an upcoming vacancy, an email will be sent out to everyone on our Housing Interest list. From there, we will schedule a showing and an application will be provided.

Yahara River View Apartments (YRVA)

Yahara River View Apartments (YRVA), Common Wealth Development’s largest apartment complex, is the ideal crossroads of location and affordability. Located on the banks of the Yahara River, YRVA provides homes to 60 households with several apartments being fully accessible. Nestled in the Williamson-Marquette Neighborhood, residents have quick access to some of the best restaurants and businesses Madison has to offer.  For outdoor enthusiasts, the Yahara River offers easy access to fishing, canoeing, and kayaking while the Yahara River Bike Path is right outside your door for an evening ride or quick commute. 

Need a break from the urban environment? Enjoy our beautifully landscaped courtyard with grilling, gardens, and playground. You’ll forget you even live in the city! For those familiar with the challenges of parking on the Isthmus, Yahara River View Apartments offers off-street and underground parking. Additional amenities include on-site laundry and reservable community spaces. While the surrounding area has seen a burst in development of new and luxury apartments, Yahara River View remains an affordable oasis for the Williamson-Marquette community! 

 

West Side

Meadowood and the Alliance

The Meadowood neighborhood brings together quiet enjoyment of the suburbs while being a short drive from Downtown Madison! Our 8 properties provide homes to 46 households which are nestled among single-family homes and a nascent and growing commercial corridor on Raymond Road. Within walking distance to parks, community gardens, bus stops, a library, and restaurants, our residents have access to everything they need without the hassle that comes with living downtown. Close to schools and many large employers, these apartments are the perfect place to call home for families trying to balance the cost of living in Madison without having to sacrifice access to its many great amenities. With our newest development at 5802 Raymond Road, we are excited to watch this neighborhood continue to grow into its full potential thanks to its strong community and wonderful neighbors.

The Road Home and Housing & Hope Program

Also, within the Meadowood Neighborhood, we are excited to announce our partnership with The Road Home, a local social service agency that provides opportunities for homeless children and their families to achieve self-determined goals and affordable, stable housing. In 2023, The Road Home approached Common Wealth with an offer to manage two properties which belong to their Housing & Hope program.  

The Housing & Hope program provides permanent, supportive, and subsidized housing to families with minors.  Residents pay a subsidized rent, (30% of their income) and are supported by a full-time on-site case manager, who provides supportive services to the households. The two buildings consist of 15 apartments located on Balsam Road, neighboring our Meadowood portfolio. 

This partnership has been an amazing opportunity to expand our mission with another organization and continue growing community in the Meadowood neighborhood. We are very excited to get to work with The Road Home and the residents in their community and feel privileged to have been entrusted with such a valuable and crucial program.   

 

East Side

Housing in the Williamson-Marquette Neighborhood

The Williamson-Marquette neighborhood is arguably one of the most sought after residential and commercial areas in the entire city of Madison. We are proud to have invested in this community’s housing stock years before it was the hotspot it is today. Throughout the neighborhood, our 17 properties are a mix of historic and renovated buildings that provide affordable apartments to 54 households. This affordability is invaluable in a neighborhood that has seen skyrocketing property values and gentrification. Our residents have access to all that Williamson Street has to offer including summer festivals, entertainment, restaurants, businesses, parks, and lakeside access. We strive to preserve the diversity and sense of belonging that has made Williamson Street renowned in Madison by ensuring our community’s working-class and fixed-income residents have high quality, affordable apartments to live in. This is the community where Common Wealth Development has its roots, and we will continue to contribute to its vibrant and rich life!
